Diagnostic tools

Suspicion of babesiosis in a dog would rise according to the clinical sign, history of travel, or when living in an endemic area.
To confirm or exclude the infection, vets must take the following tests:
  • Lesson 8. Complete blood count and Chemistry
  • Lesson 9. Organism detection – blood smear
  • Lesson 10. Serology
  • Lesson 11. Polymerase chain reaction – PCR

Treatment

The treatment is based on clinical, epidemiological, and therapeutic response criteria; It is different for large and small babesia spp. due to the fact that they have different susceptibilities to antiprotozoal drugs.

It is also crucial to treat co-infections when present and to provide supportive therapy.
